The Nanny Dog: What They Want You to Forget About The Pitbull

It may come to you as a surprise that the safest dog to have around your children is the pitbull. This is something that is trying to be erased from pitbull history. Yes, they were taught to fight, but this is because there are easily manipulated by people that own them. You also may be shocked that the pitbull is not a breed but instead a type, in fact, there are about 4 types. In this article, I'm going to give you an overview of the nanny dog.

The History

In Britain, Pitbulls were cross-bred from the old English bulldog and the varieties of old English terriers. This was to get the strength from the bulldog and the aggression from the terrier. This was for the love of blood sport such as bull and bear fighting. I can't call it fighting when they would tie the bull or bear up to a pit and have the dogs attack. Gladly they outlawed this sport and the birth of underground dogfighting started. Today dog fighting still exists but, laws are now in place to where you can face jail time for committing this crime.

Types of Pitbull

Every wonder why people always say, that is not a pit bull? Well, pitbull is not the breed it’s the type of dog. In fact, there are 4 plus pitbull breeds they include

1.     The Staffordshire Bull Terrier

2.     The American Pitbull Terrier (APBT)

3.     The American Bulldog

4.     The American Staffordshire Terrier

I am sure there are more breeds from this type, but these are the most popular. Yes, many of these dogs are being cross-bred for certain characteristics. It is always best to have your pitbull DNA test to know which breed it is. I have 5 and plan on DNA testing them so I can understand their traits better.

In conclusion, the pit bull is a dog type that was considered the nanny dog, because this breed is easy to train and they love to please. This is why in the wrong hands they can become dangerous. In the right hands, they can be great pets for you and your family.
